But it doesn&#39;t have to be this way; we need to educate the stakeholders that &quot;drill and kill&quot; and rote learning are not the keys to doing better on high-stakes testing. It&#39;s engaging the students and getting them excited about learning--digging deeper instead of skimming the surface is going to get the desired results. And the research is bearing this out.<br /><br />I&#39;m sorry to hear that your husband is demoralized; I would urge him to keep integrating the arts and locate the research that he can share with administrators on the efficacy of this approach. Thank you for your vision in this area. I have found that differentiated instruction is most powerful when it uses the arts. This is a concept I have been teaching in schools for over 35 years and have recently written about in my newly published book <i>&quot;Teaching Curriculum Through the Arts</i>.&quot; It is an idea whose time is ripe and if we are to tackle some of the awesome problems we face, we need to start teaching our children in ways they can all understand and there is no better vehicle for this than the arts. Mostly grades 3-5 and mostly local, regional and national history (native americans and early settlers, natural enviroment, undergroug railroad, etc).<BR/>When I begin a session, I tell them three things:<BR/>Everyone's a dancer.<BR/>You're never NOT dancing.<BR/>Dance = communication.<BR/><BR/>Then we move. I teach them a movement game and then point out what learning strategies they just used in the game. I help them generalize those strategies to other learning situations. They apply the strategies to the topic we are studying, create movements around the topic, organize them into Beginning/Middle/End sequences and then perform for the shool at the end of the week. <BR/><BR/>Kinesthetic learning is a huge gateway for becoming excited learners!carlthomsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00902996386134260832noreply@blogger.com
